History of Premadasas which goes back over half a century is full of rich traditions and values.

A few milestones of great significance of the Premadasas Organization history are as follows:-

1956 - The legend of Premadasas began in a small shop close to Governor Generals Residence in Colombo.

1962 - Premadasas opened a much larger showroom in Colombo – 3 due to lack of space in the earlier showroom to cater to the increasing number of customers. The customers during this period were mostly passengers of liners that called over at the Colombo harbor.

1964 - The company needing much larger space moved again into then financial hub of Colombo by which time air travel for tourism was gaining ground. The volume of business improved many fold during this period and the momentum was gathering for further increases in sales volumes.

1980 - Showroom in hill capital Kandy was opened to facilitate the increasing demand for gems and Jewellery to tourists. Within a very short period Kandy showrooms though a branch had equal standing of Colombo showrooms.

1982 - ‘Premadasas Diamond Jewellery Sales Centre’ was opened in a plush and upmarket complex in Colombo – 3, to cater to the needs of the local market. A jewellery workshop too was set up at the same location to undertake customized orders.

1988 - A grand gem and jewellery showroom was opened in Kandy. Not only did this showroom have a magnificent display of many varieties of gems, jewellery and handicrafts but also many tourist attractions such as a model gem pit, a model tunnel which is similar to tunnels in gem pits and auditorium facilities to educate tourists on gems and jewellery in over 10 languages. A jewellery factory is also setup in the Kandy showroom premises.

1998 - Shifted the Colombo – 1 showroom to a much more upmarket location in Colombo – 7. This provided easy access as well as the convenience of parking to those who visited our showroom. The corporate head office of Premadasas Gems & Jewellery (Pvt.) Ltd. was also set up in the same location in Colombo -7.

2003 – Launched the ‘Wards Pavilion’ which is a showroom of exquisite, authentic Sri Lankan handicrafts at the Colombo – 7showroom, thus making this showroom a one stop shop for all tourists and local clients who are interested in gems, jewellery and traditional as well as modern Sri Lankan handicrafts.

Success had an added impetus from 1980s onwards – Premadasas Gems & Jewellery (Pvt.) Ltd. is enjoying top rankings among the reputed gem and jewellery merchant organizations in Sri Lankan, and has expanded its businesses to many countries around the globe.

2006 – Celebrated the company’s golden jubilee (50th Anniversary) and took steps to further expand its business to many other arenas such as eco tourism and property development.
